Water Margin

Cultures around the world have long been interested in the idea of the anti-hero - a "bad guy who still does the right thing. The banditsof Water Margin, one of China's Four Great Classical Novels, are probably the best-known anti-heroes in Chinese popular culture. Shi Naian (1296-1371) wrote the novel.

长期以来，世界各地的文化都对反英雄式人物感兴趣-—一个仍然做正确事情的“坏人”。《水浒传》是中国四大古典名著之一，这可能是中国流行文化中最著名的反英雄文学。施耐庵（1296-1371年）创作了这部小说。

The novel's 108 bandits (105 men and 3 women) gather in the marshes near Liangshan Mountain, forming a large army. In the end the government pardonsthem and sends them to fight rebels.Though they may be bandits, they are determinedto protect their own people, which gains them respect.

As a classic Chinese tale of heroismanddrama, the novel has been translated into many languages. It was translated into Japanese in the 1700s, becoming one of the most influential works in the development of early modern Japanese literature, according to The Routledge Companion to World Literature.

However, perhaps its strongest influence has been outside literature. Itsfocus on action and anti-hero themes has made it perfect for adaptinginto movies, comics and even video games. The Italian comic book artist Magnus, for example, created a work called I Briganti. The book blends the story of Water Margin with Western and science fiction elements.The Western style of film often features anti-heroes such as cowboys, which makes it a good setting for the characters of Water Margin.

The book features themes such as sticking to a code of honor and the cruelty of the government. Song Jiang, a bandit leader, requires his followers to fight with honor. But in the end he is thrown in jail by the government. These themes are often found in many classic Western stories, such as The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood.

Writers of the West

Robin Hood is a well-known anti-hero of English folklore.One of the best-known versions of the Robin Hood legend is The Prince of Thieves by Alexandre Dumas. Robin Hood is mainly known for "stealing from the rich and giving to the poor. He and his friends, the Merry Men, often find themselves at odds with the corrupt Sheriff of Nottingham.

Robin Hood and his Merry Men are much like Song Jiang and his bandits.Though they do things outside the law, they gain respect for following a strict code of honor and fighting those who abuse their power.And like the anti-heroes of Water Margin, Robin Hood's story has been adapted into many movies, books and TV shows.
