《红楼梦》

Dream of the Red Chamber, one of China's four great classical novels, is,without doubt, worth reading, as there is a whole collective of fans around the world called "Redologists" who have conferences and debate its details.

《红楼梦》无疑是一部值得一读的中国古典四大名著之一。全世界有众多被称为"红学家"的爱好者们定期举办研讨会，探讨书中的精妙细节。

The epic work, taking up about 2,500 pages in its standard English translation, takes place in the Qing Dynasty. It was written by Cao Xueqin(1715-1763)and offers a panoramic view of society,in which readers can see and identify with any one of the more than 400 multi-dimensional characters.

这部文学巨著的权威英文译本约达2500页，以清代社会为背景，由曹雪芹（1715-1763）创作，展现了一幅恢宏的社会全景画卷。书中塑造的400多个立体人物形象，总能让读者从中找到产生共鸣的角色。

The female characters are particularly strong. Cao himself wrote that he wished to honor the women he knew when he was young by modeling such characters after them.

At the heart of the novel is the protagonist , Jia Baoyu, a young boy who is in a love triangle with his two cousins, Lin Daiyu and Xue Baochai. They are part of a powerful yet troubled family.

女性角色的塑造尤为突出。曹雪芹在书中自述，这些女性形象的原型来自他年轻时认识的女子，他希望通过笔墨为她们留下芳华。

故事核心围绕着少年贾宝玉与两位表姐妹——林黛玉和薛宝钗之间缠绵悱恻的爱情纠葛展开，而这个钟鸣鼎食之家实则暗藏危机。

Readers are invited to ponder a wide range of subjects, from metaphysics to psychology, through the everyday conversations that the boy has with each character he meets. One of these, in fact, takes place in a moment when he is simply deciding whether to have tea, as his nanny recommends.

In the West, the first attempt to translate this novel into English took place in 1812, when a part of Chapter 4 was translated by Robert Morrison a Scot. However, the first complete translation of the story wasn't completed until more than a century and a half later-between 1973 and 1986.

通过主人公与各色人物充满机锋的日常对话，读者得以窥见从形而上学到心理学的广阔天地。其中一段经典对话，竟发生在宝玉斟酌是否要按照乳母建议饮茶的生活瞬间。

在西方世界，最早翻译这部作品的尝试可追溯至1812年，苏格兰人罗伯特·莫里森完成了第四回片段的英译。但全书的完整译本直至一个半世纪后才问世——首部全译本于1973至1986年间陆续完成。

Besides literal translations, the story has received other forms of attention, one of which was an English Language opera that was composed by Bright Sheng and premiered in San Francisco, in 2016. Western critics have characterized Dream of the Red Chamber as one of the most significant of all the stories to come out of China.

除文字翻译外，这部作品还催生了多种艺术再创作。2016年，由盛宗亮创作的英文歌剧版《红楼梦》在旧金山首演。西方评论界将其誉为中国文学史上最具影响力的杰作之一。

It "is the fullest immersion one could hope for into late imperialChina, the best access to the minds, hearts and habits of that period, complete in everything from cosmology to cosmetics", wrote Josh Stenberg, Lecturer in Chinese studies at the University of Sydney, Australia.
